  • Dr. Robert Sanborn

    President & CEO

    Dr. Sanborn is a noted leader, advocate, and activist for education and children and the President and CEO of CHILDREN AT RISK. Dr. Sanborn earned his undergraduate degree at Florida State University and his doctorate at Columbia University in New York City. Before entering the non-profit sector, he had a distinguished career in higher education at institutions such as Rice University and Hampshire College. He has worked and served as a senior leader with many organizations, always bringing with him a focus on innovation, collaborations with like-minded groups, resource developing partnerships, and a belief that all children deserve extraordinary opportunities to succeed.

    Under his leadership, CHILDREN AT RISK has expanded its influence considerably. Notable achievements include opening up centers in Dallas and Fort Worth; launching the Public Policy & Law Center, the CHILDREN AT RISK Institute, the Center for Parenting and Family Well-Being and the Center to End Trafficking and Exploitation of Children; directing significantly increased media attention to the issues championed by the organization; and increasing the organizational capacity to drive macro-level change to improve the lives of Texas’ most defenseless children. Sanborn is the Executive Editor of two peer reviewed, open access academic journals, the Journal of Applied Research on Children and the Journal of Family Strengths. He is also the host of the popular radio program and podcast Growing Up in America on the Pacifica Radio Network. He continues to work to end poverty at a systematic level through advocacy with community organizations and an increased awareness among public officials and the media.

  • Andy Canales

    Director, Center for Social Measurement and Evaluation

    Andy Canales is the Director of the Center for Social Measurement and Evaluation at CHILDREN AT RISK,  where he helps lead advocacy efforts and is responsible for the execution of all the organization’s strategic research projects.

    Before joining CHILDREN AT RISK, Andy served as a founding director of the Commit Partnership in Dallas where he led the organization’s flagship initiative with numerous partners to improve early literacy outcomes for over 8,000 children. Beforehand, Andy worked in corporate philanthropy and as a teacher in high-need communities NYC and in Miami as a 2008 Teach For America corps member.

    Andy holds a dual B.A. in Political Science and Religion from Pepperdine University and a Master’s of Science in Education from Hunter College. As the son of Salvadoran immigrants and first one in his family to graduate from college, Andy is passionate about expanding educational equity through data, partnerships, and advocacy.

  • Jamey Caruthers

    Senior Staff Attorney

    James “Jamey” Caruthers is a Sr. Staff Attorney at CHILDREN AT RISK. Jamey graduated from the University of Houston Law Center in 2008, and focused on commercial and corporate litigation at Fridge & Resendez, LLC prior to joining C@R in September 2014. Jamey also has legislative experience working for a political action committee, and is excited to be part of an organization that is driving positive policy changes on the behalf of Texas’ children. Jamey was first drawn to children’s issues as a result of his family going through the adoption process to adopt their youngest child, Genevieve. They also have a son named Julian.  Jamey is president of the parish council at his church, and is active in the Fort Bend County community.

  • Mandi Sheridan Kimball

    Director, Public Policy and Government Affairs

    Mandi Sheridan Kimball has been advocating for Houston children since 2004. In January 2006 she became CHILDREN AT RISK’s Public Policy Analyst and now serves as the Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs. She received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Houston and received her Bachelors degree in Social Work from St. Edwards in Austin. Health and human services are a priority on Mandi’s advocacy agenda. Her experience and knowledge of the Texas Legislature has assisted her efforts in achieving quality care and services to Houston’s most vulnerable youth.

  • Dr. Katie McConnell

    Chief Operating Officer

    Dr. Katie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of St. Thomas in Houston and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She is currently pursuing her EdD in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Prior to joining CHILDREN AT RISK in June of 2014, Katie was a teacher and administrator in a local district. Katie’s background in education will provide a unique perspective to the work being done at CHILDREN AT RISK, and she is eager to serve student populations in a different capacity.

  • Dr. Charlotte Carlisle

    Managing Director, North Texas Office

    An advocate to improve the quality of education for all students, Dr. Charlotte Carlisle began her career as a high school math teacher.  Her non-profit experience includes working as the Math Content Director for the Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative, serving as President of Advanced Placement Strategies in Texas, and as the Vice-President of Programs and Operations for the National Math and Science Initiative.  Dr. Carlisle earned a doctorate in Education Leadership from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor, a M.B.A from UMHB, and a Bachelor of Science from Baylor University.

    • Shay Everitt

      Assistant Director, Public Policy and Early Education

      Shay has served as Assistant Director of Public Policy and Early Education since August 2015. She received a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Houston, where she focused on early childhood and family wellbeing issues. During her graduate studies, she interned with the Houston Housing Authority, Project Row Houses, and Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston. Shay also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Mass Communication. Prior to joining CHILDREN AT RISK, Shay worked for former Houston mayor Bill White for six years, first on his campaign for governor and afterward in the private sector. Shay is passionate about giving children a healthy start to life and is excited to help CHILDREN AT RISK advocate for our youngest Texans.

    • Charlotte Fostey

      Assistant Director of Development & Assistant to the CEO

      Charlotte Fostey graduated from Creighton University with a B.A. in International Relations and Spanish & Hispanic Studies and a minor in Business Administration. As an undergraduate student, she studied abroad in Spain, conducting research and interviews on the role of women in the military and the police forces of Spain, and her final thesis focused on the root causes that affect levels of civil liberty throughout the world. Upon graduation from Creighton, Charlotte moved back to Houston and worked in the oil and gas industry for two years. Seeking to make a positive change in her own life, as well as in the world around her, Charlotte began her CHILDREN AT RISK career in the fall of 2015 as a Development Intern. Working for CHILDREN AT RISK full time now allows her to spend her days working to improve the lives of Texas’ children.

    • Rashena Lindsay Flagg

      Public Relations Consultant

      Rashena Lindsay Flagg consults on public relations and marketing projects for CHILDREN AT RISK. She has more than 10 years of experience developing marketing initiatives and communications strategies, including corporate and employee communications, external communications, and crisis communications, for companies like Cingular Wireless, Sprint PCS and Hallmark Cards, Inc. Rashena holds a Master’s degree in Marketing and Media, and a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism and Corporate Communications.

    • Emily Freeborn

      Staff Attorney

      Emily Freeborn joined CHILDREN AT RISK in October 2016 and serves as a Staff Attorney for the Center to End Trafficking and Exploitation of Children. She is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio and has a B.S. in Business Administration and a minor in Spanish from The Ohio State University. She earned her Juris Doctorate in 2013 from New York Law School where she was active in the Street Law program, teaching 4th amendment rights to middle school children in the Bronx. Emily began her legal career as an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Texas working in the Child Support Division. She also served as Staff Attorney for Catholic Charities representing unaccompanied immigrant children, including victims of human trafficking. Emily enjoys discovering outdoor oases across Texas and spending quality time with her BFF, her 3 year old nephew.

    • Ben Halvorsen

      Americorps VISTA Outreach Coordinator

      Ben Halvorsen graduated from Connecticut College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences. Before relocating to Houston, Ben worked at the Baltimore Brew, a local online news journal in Baltimore, MD. Seeking to focus more on public service and to gain more experience in a non-profit setting, Ben joined CHILDREN AT RISK as an AmeriCorps VISTA Outreach Coordinator in August 2016. Ben hopes to further his education in law or public health to focus on public policy and environmental discrimination.

    • Marissa Johnston

      Managing Editor

      Marissa joined CHILDREN AT RISK as the Project Editorial Coordinator in June 2015. She holds a BS degree from James Madison University where she majored in Justice Studies: Global Justice and Policy and she minored in Creative Writing. As a former nanny and Irish dance instructor and as an aunt to four nieces and nephews, Marissa has developed a passion for helping children to grow and succeed. She is excited to be a part of the CHILDREN AT RISK team and effect positive change for children in Texas and all over the United States.

    • Katie Martinez

      Assistant Director of Development

      Katie joined CHILDREN AT RISK as the Assistant Director of Development in September 2016. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Houston. As part of the program, she interned at The Greater Heights Chamber of Commerce, focusing on education and community outreach. Prior to joining CHILDREN AT RISK, she worked with the community’s non-profit Blood Center for 4 years, securing donations to ensure a sufficient blood supply for our region. While pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Texas Tech University, Katie also volunteered with at-risk youth. Katie is excited to continue expanding her experience with community development and advocacy to improve the lives of children throughout Texas.

    • Kellie O’Quinn

      Assistant Director, Public Policy and Early Education

      Kellie O’Quinn holds a Bachelors of Science of Sociology from Texas A&M University and a Master of Social Work degree, with a specialization in political social work from the University of Houston. She joined CHILDREN AT RISK as Assistant Director of Public Policy and Early Education in September 2015. Prior to joining CHILDREN AT RISK, Kellie worked with Family and Community Engagement Specialists to develop and evaluate programs that increase families’ capacity to actively engage in the education of their children. She also taught in San Pedro Sula, Honduras giving her valuable experience in international education and community development. Kellie is passionate about education and is excited to help CHILDREN AT RISK advocate on behalf of children across Texas.

    • Charanya Ravikumar

      Assistant Director, Development

      Charanya Ravikumar holds a Bachelors of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from U.T. Austin. She started off her career as a Computer Engineer at Dell in Austin, TX. During that time, Charanya volunteered with several non-profits and planned community service projects for Dell employees. She is a long-time volunteer with Asha for Education and has planned and executed key fundraising initiatives for the organization. After 7 years as an engineer, Charanya decided to switch career paths and obtained a Nonprofit Management certification from Duke University. She joined CHILDREN AT RISK as Assistant Director of Development in September 2015. Charanya has always been passionate about children’s causes, but especially more so now as a mother of two young children. She is committed to making Texas a great place for all children to grow up in.

    • Claire Treacy

      Project Coordinator, Center for Social Measurement and Evaluation

      Claire serves as the Project Coordinator for the Center for Social Measurement and Evaluation at CHILDREN AT RISK. Claire attended Texas A&M University where she earned a bachelor’s degree studying effective methods and practices for positive youth development. While at Texas A&M she participated in the Bush School of Government’s – Advanced International Affairs program where she gained an appreciation for public policy and nonprofit development. Prior to joining CHILDREN AT RISK, Claire spent two years with Living Water International structuring and executing their college development campaign, providing global access to clean water. She is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work with a political emphasis from the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston. Claire is excited to engage in macro-level change for Texas’ youth with CHILDREN AT RISK.

    • Laura Rodriguez

      Laura is the Administrative Associate for CHILDREN AT RISK. She graduated from The University of the South in Sewanee, TN in 2012 with a B.A. in History and minor in Education. She is currently pursuing a Master of Public Policy at the University of Houston and is hoping to also pursue a Master of Social Work. Hoping to make a positive change and gain experience working in non-profit, Laura joined CHILDREN AT RISK in January 2017.

      • Jennifer Sudkamp

        Assistant Director of Development

        Jennifer graduated from Southwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, and a minor in French. She then worked in public relations, serving a variety of clients and companies. After several years, she switched gears and earned her Master of Science in Technical Communication from the University of Houston-Downtown and returned to her passion – non-profit work. She joined the CHILDREN AT RISK team in 2016 managing grant efforts. As a mother of two, Jennifer is passionate about improving lives for all children throughout. Continuing her desire to help others that began with her first volunteer position at the age of 13, she continues to serve her community. Currently, she volunteers for her children’s schools, supports Southwestern as an alumni volunteer, and serves as a Girl Scout troop leader.

        • Cheri Colter, Ph.D.

          Assistant Coordinator, Child Health Research and Policy

          Cheri Colter holds a doctoral research degree in Public Policy and Political Economy from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a Master of Science degree in Global Finance, Trade and Economic Integration from the University of Denver Korbel Institute. Her doctoral dissertation evaluated the impact of neighborhood environment on academic outcomes in an area of concentrated disadvantage in south Dallas. Prior to joining CHILDREN AT RISK in the fall of 2015, Cheri worked in the administration of Dallas International School, a French government certified pre-k through high school. Cheri is currently focused on food policy advocacy work for CHILDREN AT RISK.

        • Jenny Eyer

          Senior Policy Analyst/Manager of the Center for Child Health Research & Policy

          Jenny Eyer graduated with a B.S. in Biochemistry from Abilene Christian University in 2008, and earned her MPH with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health in 2012. She has worked as a research assistant for the University of Texas School of Public Health and Dell Center for Healthy Living to promote child health in the North Texas area. This work focused on implementing a coordinated school health program, CATCH, into Dallas area middle schools. Her work here included facilitating program implementation, collecting measurement data, and assisting with curriculum integration. Jenny currently leads CHILDREN AT RISK’s Food in Schools Initiative as it expands its efforts across the state.

        • Dixie Hairston

          CEASE Network North Texas Coordinator

          Dixie Hairston graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and from the University of Houston with a Master of Social Work degree specializing in political social work. Previous to CHILDREN AT RISK, she worked for an arts education advocacy organization in Washington, DC and has experience advocating for women and children on a local, state and national level. Dixie is a native Texas and is passionate about advocating for policies that create safer environments for the state’s most vulnerable children. Dixie leads our anti-sex trafficking initiatives out of our North Texas office.

        • Kelley O’Conan

          AmeriCorps VISTA Project Coordinator

          Kelley O’Conan joined CHILDREN AT RISK in July of 2015 and is currently pursuing graduate work in Linguistics. She has a diverse background, previously serving in the military and working as a Paralegal. She entered the non-profit sector in 2011, focusing on vulnerable populations in Fort Worth. Kelley graduated magna cum laude from University of Texas at Arlington in 2010 with a B.A. in Linguistics and Communications.

        • Alayna Sublette

          AmeriCorps VISTA Project Coordinator

          Alayna graduated from Texas Christian University in 2016 with a B.S. in Political Science and minors in International Economics and Spanish. Prior to working for CHILDREN AT RISK, Alayna interned for Fort Worth Sister Cities International and Tarrant Literacy Coalition. Alayna is particularly interested in international development and human rights policy and hopes to pursue a Master’s in Peace and Conflict Studies and/or Non-profit Management. As an AmeriCorps VISTA Project Coordinator working in the areas of Food Insecurity and Development at CHILDREN AT RISK, Alayna looks forward to serving her community on a domestic level and advocating for children so that they can live healthier and happier lives.
