C@R Celebrates 10 Years of Service in North Texas.

On December 4th, 2021, CHILDREN AT RISK (C@R) celebrated ten years of service in the North Texas region in an intimate holiday gathering. Bringing together board members, supporters, staff, and new friends, the event was hosted by North Texas Advisory Board Member Amit Parikh and North Texas Regional Director Dr. Margo McClinton Stoglin. Thank you to all who gathered to celebrate CHILDREN AT RISK and the holiday season. 

Over the past ten years, C@R has served as a catalyst for change through strategic research, public policy analysis, education, collaboration, and advocacy to improve the quality of life for children in North Texas. Many of our statewide programs and successful policy pushes originated with our North Texas office, including our Texas School Guide Project, Kroger Food Rankings, and early childhood education efforts. C@R is a founding member of the Early Learning Alliance of Tarrant County and continues to advocate on behalf of North Texas early educators through our Texas Prenatal to Three Collaborative.

During the 2021 Texas legislative session, C@R collaborated with numerous North Texas legislators to help pass 17 bills for children into law. C@R advocates worked closely with State Representative Angie Chen Button of District 112 (portions of Garland, Richardson, Rowlett, Sachse, and Dallas County) on several groundbreaking child care policies that will benefit families and businesses in North Texas and statewide.

CHILDREN AT RISK’s success in the North Texas region would be impossible without strong board leadership. Past, present, and future North Texas Advisory board chairs attended the December 4th gathering. Long time serving member of C@R’s North Texas Advisory Board and Statewide Governing Board, Timmy Newsome was honored for his many years of service to the organization. Timmy, a former Dallas Cowboys football player and current owner of Newtec Business Solutions, served as North Texas Advisory Board Chair from 2017-2019.

Current Advisory Board Chair Genai Walker-Macklin was also recognized. Genai Walker-Macklin is a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley. Before helping families, corporate executives, and professional athletes with financial planning and risk management, Genai played professional basketball with several teams in Europe before ending her career with the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock. In addition to her work with C@R, Genai supports many national and local nonprofit organizations, including the Texas chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, NAACP of Garland, and many others.

Taking over as North Texas Board Chair for Walker-Macklin is Chris Wallace. Chris serves as President and CEO of the North Texas Commission, a unique public-private partnership that drives large impactful projects and legislative advocacy benefiting a robust 13-county region. His extensive experience in governmental relations is an asset to C@R’s advocacy efforts on behalf of North Texas children.

“We so appreciate the efforts and hard work of Genai and Chris as they help us better serve the North Texas region, said C@R President and CEO, Dr. Bob Sanborn. “One out of every four children in Texas call this region home, and we are looking forward to the opportunities to better serve and advocate on behalf of this community.”

As C@R gears up for the next ten years, we are excited to welcome Dr. Marguerite “Margo” McClinton Stoglin’s leadership as our newly appointed North Texas Regional Director. Margo brings a wealth of nonprofit management and strategic consulting experience to the North Texas office. She is the CEO of CRM & Associates, LLC, consulting with clients on operational and strategic needs clients including ABI, Concord Church, and Grant Thornton.

“I am excited to support CHILDREN AT RISK in the North Texas region as it advocates for sustainable, long-term, and evidenced-based reforms to policies and community-wide practices,” said Stoglin. “During an unprecedented time of need, C@R will continue to focus on children’s rights through academic and legal expertise, to achieve the high-level impact that paves the way to an equitable and just society.”

We at CHILDREN AT RISK are so thankful to the North Texas community for supporting us over the last ten years. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is more than just home to a quarter of Texas children. The region is an innovation hub for education, health, nutrition, and child abuse prevention.

We look forward to continuing to learn from the community and support public policies that serve North Texas children!
