Volume 3, Issue 1 (2012): Food Insecurity

Launched in the Fall of 2010, the Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk (JARC) is an open-access and peer-reviewed online journal published in the Fall and Spring.  JARC serves to inform policy affecting children by providing applicable research to the public, child advocates, and policy-makers on timely children’s issues.  This journal seeks to encourage academics to focus on the needs of children and make practical children-focused research available and accessible to the public for use and dissemination.

The Journal is lead by co-Editors-in-Chief Angelo Giardino, M.D., Ph.D., and Robert Sanborn, Ed.D., Associate Editors Christopher Greeley, M.D., F.A.A.P. and Ruth SoRelle, M.P.H., and an editorial board comprised of senior-level academics from higher education institutions across Texas.  The Journal of Applied Research on Children is published by The Houston Academy of Medicine – Texas Medical Center Library.

The first issue of the Journal, focused on Latino children, was released in September 2010.  This issue, guest edited by Dr. William Flores, President of University of Houston-Downtown, brings together new research on key issues impacting Latino youth in the United States, including poverty, physical activity, and teen pregnancy.  The first issue is available to read (free of charge) here.

Volume 2, Issue 1 of the Journal of Applied Research on Children, released March 2011, focuses important academic attention on the subject of human trafficking.  This issue, guest edited by Congressman Ted Poe and Senator Leticia Van de Putte, features articles on multiple dimensions of human trafficking:  human trafficking survivors and their children, runaway and throwaway youth, sex trafficking of American minors, trafficking on the Southern border, and the role and training needs of the health care provider.  Read the full Human Trafficking issue online here.

The third issue of the Journal, Volume 2, Issue 2, was released in October 2011 and focused on the topic of teen pregnancy.  This issue, guest edited by William Smith,  Executive Director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, features articles on adolescent sexual behavior, sex education, and the effects of public policies on teen birth rates.  Read the full Teen Pregnancy issue online here.

The fourth issue of the Journal, Volume 3, Issue 1, was released in February 2012 and features research on food insecurity. Jim Weill, CEO of the Food Research and Action Committee (FRAC), served as the guest editor. The issue features a variety of research on the causes of food insecurity, its effects on a child’s life, and the experiences of organizations that are working to fight the problem.
